AGED MAN FOUND DEAD IN BED THIS MORNING
---------------
WILLIAM APPLEGATE, OF THIS CITY, VICTIM OF HEART TROUBLE.
---------------
LIVED WITH MRS. EMMA COULSON
--------------
Discovery That He Had Passed Away Was Made by Her
at Two O'clock --- Leaves Two Sons and Two Daughters.
----------

William Applegate, 70 years old, was found dead in bed at two o'clock this morning at the home of his cousin, Mrs. Emma Coulson, with whom he had been living for the past few months. The discovery was made by Mrs. Coulson.

Mr. Applegate had been suffering for some time from valvular heart trouble and had been under the care of Dr. F. E. Ray and the latter signed the death certificate on the order of the coroner, who decided it was not necessary to hold an inquest.

After Mr. Applegate had lain down on the bed last evening he was troubled very much with a cough. Mrs. Coulson asked him to take some medicine, but he refused, and soon fell asleep with his clothes on. Mrs. Coulson also retired, and slept soundly until nearly two o'clock. As soon as she awoke she called to Mr. Applegate, but received no response, and when she reached his bedside found that he had been dead for some time.

The deceased had been living in this city for several years, but was born and reared in Hendricks township.

The body was taken from the Coulson home to the Stewart & Fix undertaking parlors, where it was prepared today for burial. The arrangements for the funeral will not be made until all the relatives have been consulted. The interment will be made in the Second Mt. Pleasant cemetery.

Mr. Applegate leaves two daughters, Mrs. Ella Means, of Columbus, Ind., and Mrs. Hattie Wortman, of this city.

He is also survived by two sons, Edward, of Indianapolis and Frank, of Scipio, Ind.

Edward Brooks Applegate II
June 2, 1926 - June 7, 2013

Edward Brooks Applegate II, a true gentleman, passed away on June 7, 2013 at age 87. Brooks, as he was known to all, was revered by his friends and family for the kindness and respect he always showed others, whether it be the stranger just met or the son-in-law who failed to properly tie off his dingy allowing it to drift across White Lake. He loved his friends, maps & charts, ice cream, Mackinac racing, Travis McGee, strawberries, dogs, life at the lake and “simply messing about in boats” - although not necessarily in that order.

Brooks, a champion sailor, was taught by his mother during childhood summers spent on Portage Lake, in northern Michigan. He raced Snipes, Sunfish, E scows, and Sonars to numerous victories. However, he considered his greatest success as a sailor to have occurred in 1953 when he met his wife-to-be, Susanne “Doddin” Applegate, while competing in a regatta at the White Lake Yacht Club. Brooks always considered her the superior sailor and together they cruised the Great Lakes/North Channel, and the Caribbean and Mediterranean Seas.

In addition to his love of all things boats, Brooks was an avid sportsman and dedicated conservationist. He was a sure shot when it came to hunting game and an elegant fly fisherman known for his ability to cast in all types of weather. He cherished his time at Grass Lake Hunting and Fishing Club, bird hunting in Illinois, and elk hunting in Colorado.

As a part of the “greatest generation,” Brooks enlisted in the Navy in 1943 shortly before his graduation from East Grand Rapids High School and reported for active duty soon after commencement. He served in the Pacific theater.

After his honorable discharge from the Navy, he attended Colgate University and in 1951 became a second generation Colgate graduate, majoring in geography. Brooks returned to Grand Rapids and joined his father’s business selling forest products.

Brooks was born to George and Margaret Perkins Applegate on June 2, 1926 at Blodgett Hospital, East Grand Rapids, MI. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Doddin Applegate. He was preceded in death by son Stephen Hunter Applegate (married to Julie Curtis Applegate), and is survived by son Brooks Applegate III of Kalamazoo, MI and daughter Martha Schonberger, wife of Lawrence Schonberger of Leesburg, VA. He is also survived by six grandchildren, Brooks IV, Kara and Malia Applegate, and Ben, Samuel and Harrison Schonberger.

There will be a memorial service for Brooks at the Wabaningo Club at Sylvan Beach on Sunday, July 28th at four o’clock. As an expression of sympathy, donations to the White Lake Sailing School in memory of Brooks and his passion for sailing may be mailed to P.O. Box 454, Whitehall, MI 49461 or made online: http://wlsailingschool.com/

3741 Obituary of Sarah Ann (aka Sallie) [APPLEGATE] MCNARY
Greencastle Star Press
Greencastle, IN
23 Feb 1901

The funeral services of Aunt Sallie McNary occurred in the Christian Church at Fillmore, at 10 o'clock on Sunday, Feb. 17, 1901, conducted by the pastor, Elder W. H. Brown, who spoke from the text, "Be thou faithful until death, and I will give thee a crown of life." The house was well crowded with relatives and old-time friends, to whom Mr. Brown spoke earnestly, introducing by saying: "I speak to-day in in Gospel language because the subject of this funeral discourse was a faithful, obedient believer of the Gospel and one who relied upon the Gospel promises until death."

At close of discourse proper the following was read: "Before us is a saint fallen asleep. Mrs. Sarah Applegate McNary. On Dec 13, 1892, occurred in this house the funeral services of John McNary. He was married to Miss Sarah Applegate on her twentieth birthday, Nov. 8, 1838, and for over 54 years they lived together. Both were born in Kentucky. She was a daughter of Peter and Ellen Applegate, and came with her parents to Putnam County about 1830. She was born Nov. 8, 1818, in Mason county, KY., and died at her home in Fillmore, Feb. 14, 1901, at the age of 82 years, 3 months and 6 days. She is the last one of the Peter Applegate family of eleven children. The last eight years of her life were spent a widow. She and Mr. McNary bought land in Marion township in 1845, settled upon it, and by temperate and industrious habits, made a splendid farm and lived on it until they removed to Fillmore in 1885. To Brother and Sister McNary were born seven children, the oldest dying in infancy and the others living to a noble manhood and womanhood--whose names are in order of their ages: Charles, William, Louise Sinclair, Margaret Knight, Peter and Harry. Dr. Charles died in 1880, and Mrs. Knight in 1892. Now living are four children, eleven grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren, besides a number of nephews and nieces. In the early history of the Christian Church in this county, when the disciples met in the court house and in private houses about the town of Greencastle, she became a Christian, and right closely did she follow her Savior for more than 57 years. From Greencastle she moved her membership to Old Union and when the church was organized at Fillmore in 1853, her name was the first to head the list of what has since grown to 374 names.

She needs no eulogy from human lips. Suffice it to say, she had a friendly heart-was truly a mother to all who came into her home and were thrown for any length in her company. In the sacred portals of her home she was queen. Here she wrought with a heart undivided and unalterably true. She attracted the hearts of her children and grandchildren to a knowledge and attainment of better things, and stirred them within to noble ambitions of industry, integrity and love. She was the center of an affectionate family, the object of their live. When one suffered, all suffered, and when one succeeded, all rejoiced. It is a consolation to think of these things at this hour when the early tie is broken. It will be a sad day to this community when the lives of such women as Sallie McNary are forgotten and the influence of such examples are unheeded. Let faithfulness claim a Savior's promises and put on the crown of life. Her home just across the street was the antechamber of this church. Into th is home Aunt Sallie received us, all kindly without a complaint and often administered to the necessity of saints. In the morning 14th she came out of her dining room into the sitting room, took her knitting in hand, sat down in the old arm chair and then went to sleep. Peace be to thee."
