Charles V. Applegate, 82, died early Friday morning, July 5, 2013 in MedCentral Hospital of Mansfield. He was born October 5, 1930 in Perrysville and was the son of the late Russell and Geneive (Guthrie) Applegate. Charles was a 1948 graduate of Perrysville High School, and had a Master’s Degree in Theater from DePaul University in Chicago as well as a Master’s Degree in Arts from Bob Jones University of Greenville, NC. He worked in the Make-Up and Film Production departments and portrayed Matthew Brady, the Civil War photographer, in the film “Red Runs the River”. Charles was a US Army veteran serving as a Chaplain’s Assistant while stationed in Germany from 1948 until 1952. He was a member and organist for the Loudonville Baptist Temple. Charles spent his summers working at Kingwood Center until becoming a full-time employee during the ‘60’s. His Kingwood years developed his passion for plants, in particular, hybridized daylilies, re-blooming iris, daffodils, and hostas. He loved the staff and his ‘special volunteers’ at Kingwood.

He is survived by his wife, Linda (Knupke) Applegate, whom he married Sept. 16, 1972; 2 sons: Jonathan A. Applegate and friend Tina, and Seth A. (Tiffany) Applegate all of Perrysville; and 3 brothers: Harold (Audrey) Applegate of Perrysville, Don Applegate of Oregon, and Edwin (Barbara) Applegate of Mifflin. He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant son.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, July 10th at 11:00 AM in the Loudonville Baptist Temple with Rev. David Koehler and Dr. Robert Seaman, officiating. Burial with military honors will be held in the Chapel of Ashland County Memorial Park, State Route 250, Ashland, OH. Friends may call on Tuesday evening, July 9th from 5-8 PM in the Lindsey Funeral Home, Loudonville. Memorial contributions may be given to Loudonville Baptist Temple, 15528 State Route 3, Loudonville, OH 44842 or Kingwood Center, 900 Park Avenue West, Mansfield, OH 44906.
