BR1A2B (NO LISTING) Fannie Ellsworth Appelgate, b. February 1878, in NY (NY, Kings Co., New York, Brooklyn Bor., Dist. 2/400, Sheet 3A, 25/53 [February 1878, birthplace NY]), d. ____. She married on April 30, 1902 at the home of her parents at 678 Gates Ave., Brooklyn, NY, Theodore Howard Vought, b. ___, d. ____. The wedding was a large enough event that it was covered by the Brooklyn Eagle.
VOUGHT—APPELGATE
Miss Fannie Ellsworth Appelgate, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George W. Appelgate of 678 Gates avenue was married at her parents’ home Wednesday evening to Theodore Howard Vought. During the afternoon the parlors had been transformed into a flower garden, the color scheme being pond and white. Palms were everywhere. The mantels were banked high with pink roses and carnations and smilax. The Rev. Dr. Woelfkin of Greene Avenue Baptist Church officiated. The bride was given away by her father and was attended by her two sisters. Miss Florence S. Appelgate was bridesmaid and Miss Lidie C. Appelgate acted as maid of honor. Both wore white point d’esprit gowns, trimmed with pink panne velvet, and carried bridesmaid’s fosse. The bride’s gown was a handsome creation of silk mall trimmed with Chantilly lace., and she wore a veil of tulle, which was fastened with orange blossoms. She carried shower bouquet of white roses and lilies of the valley. Little Evelyn E. Appelgate, the 5 year old nice of the bide, in a white organdy dress over pink silk acted as a flower girl. Alfred Gumaer of Jersey City was best man. the bridegroom’s gift was a handsome brooch of diamonds and pearls. A reception followed the wedding. The start of the wedding journey was marked by the usual abundance of old shoes and rice. Mr. and Mrs. Vought have gone on a Southern trip. While away they will visit Washington, Old Point Comfort and other popular Southern resorts, and on their return will make their home at 98 Macon street.

BR1A3C1 (NO LISTING) Everett Clifford Appelgate, b. December 1899 in NY (NY, Kings Co., Brooklyn, Ward 23, 2/398, Sheet 10B, 162/209 [December 1899, birthplace NY]; 1905 NY State Census, Kings Co., Brooklyn Bor., ED 28, AD 4, Block B, p. 10 [age 5]), d. 16 July 1936 in Ossining, Westchester Co., NY (Sing Sing), where he was executed for the murder of his wife. He married in 1920, Ada D. Johnson, b. Aug. 1899, d. 27 Sep. 1935 in Nassau Co., NY, of arsenic poisoning. Everett was convicted of her murder.
Sometime prior to 1920, Everett moved to Baldwin, Nassau Co., NY with his parents. In his grandfather Joseph Henry’s probate file, his father Harry Clifford is identified as living in Baldwin, Nassau Co., NY.
He was still living there in 1934. In that year, Everett, his wife Ada, and their daughter Agnes moved out of Ada’s parents’ home into the house of Everett’s American Legion buggy, John Creighton. Also living in the house were Creighton’s wife Frances, daughter Ruth, and son Jack. (Mark Gado, Death Row Women: Murder, Justice, and the New York Press (2008), p. 98).
Everett soon began having sexual intercourse with Ruth Creighton, age 15 or 16 (reports of her age differ). He also slept with Frances Creighton. Frances Creighton began giving doses of arsenic to Ada Appelgate. Frances had probably previously poisoned her mother-in-law and brother in 1923. (Id. at 101). She was convicted of the murder of Ada, but her testimony also implicated Everett, who was also convicted.
In Death Row Women, Gaddo refers to testimony at trial by Everett’s “Uncle Joseph” from New Jersey. This is Joseph Henry 5D4C7A3G. | Appelgate, Everett Clifford (I38436)

Dist. 4, p. 17, 81/186 [age 22, birthplace Kings Co, NY]; 1892 NY State Census, Kings Co., Brooklyn, Ward 11, ED 19, p. 18 [age 38]; 1900 US Census, NY, Kings Co., Brooklyn, Ward 20, 2/305, Sheet 15B, 143/365 [December 1852, birthplace NY];1905 NY State Census, Kings Co., ED 18, AD 10, Block E, p. 29 [age 52]), d. ____. He married abt 1878 (1900 US Census, supra [married 22 years]) (1) Carrie A. Mole, b. Aug 1860 (1892 NY State Census, supra [age 30]; 1900 US Census, supra [August 1860, birthplace NY]), d. March 26, 1901 (Brooklyn Eagle, March 28, 1901, p. 5), 2) Ellen T. ____, b. abt 1858 (1905 NY State Census, Kings Co., supra [age 47]), d. _____.
Edward was enumerated in the household of Edward in 1870. He was 16 years old and an apprentice brick mason. (1870 US Census, supra). He appears to have stayed in the brick laying business his whole life. In the 1878 Brooklyn city directory, he and his father (Edward N) are both listed as masons living at 176 Myrtle Ave., Brooklyn (1878 Brooklyn City Directory, p. 16). He may be the Edward Appelgate, mason, living at 659 Warren—this is the only Applegate/Appelgate mason listed in the directory. If he is this Edward, his father Edward had either retired, moved, or died.
In 1877, Edward "son of a well known Brooklyn oysterman" filed for divorce from his wife Sarah, alleging she abandoned him and was living "an improper life in Philadelphia". (Brooklyn Daily Eagle, Sept. 27, 1877, p. 4).
In 1892, Edward L and his family were living in Brooklyn, NY. Edward L was 38, and a bricklayer; Carrie A was 30; Elizabeth was 7; and William F was 10. (1892 NY State Census, supra). “William F” is probably an enumerator’s error replacing “Lillian F”.
In 1897, there is a Edward L Appelgate living at 79 North Portland Ave., Brooklyn. He was a mason. (1897 Lain Brooklyn City Directory). Three years later, in the 1900 Census, Edward L Appelgate is still living there. The 79 North Portland Edward L Appelgate has this household:
Address: 79 North Portland
Appelgate, Edward L Head Dec 1852 Married 22 years Mason
-- Carrie A Wife Aug 1860 2/2 children
-- Elizabeth M Daughter Sep 1879
-- Lillian F Daughter July 1882
(1900 US Census, NY, Kings Co., Brooklyn, Ward 20, 2/305, Sheet 15B, 143/365).
Based upon the middle initial “L”, the spelling of the last name “Appelgate”, and his occupation, I believe this is the same person. In addition, 79 North Portland is only about six blocks from 176 Myrtle.
Edward L’s first wife died on March 28, 1901. (Brooklyn Eagle, March 28, 1901, p. 5). He apparently remarried to Ellen T. sometime before 1905.
In 1905, Edward L and his new wife were living at 374 Myrtle Avenue in Brooklyn. Edward L was 52 and a mason; Ellen T. was 47.
I can find no further record of Edward.

BR1B (5D4C7A) William R. Appelgate, b. abt 1920 in Kings Co., NY (1850 US Census, NY, Kings Co., Brooklyn, 17th Ward, 1291/2189 [age 30, birthplace NY]; 1870 US Census, New York, Kings County, 7th Ward, p. 114 [age 50, birthplace NY]; 1875 NY State Census, Kings Co., Brooklyn, Ward 7, p. 55, 368/479 [age 55, birthplace Kings Co., NY]), d. November 12, 1891 at 164 Skillman Street in Brooklyn, Kings Co., NY (Brooklyn Eagle, November 13, 1891, p. 4; Probate File of William R Applegate, December 7, 1891, [no file number]). He married (1) Ellen ____, b. abt. 1824 in NY (1850 US Census, supra [age 26, birthplace NY]) d. bef 1870; and (2) Elizabeth ______, b. abt 1836 in Westchester Co., NY (1870 US Census, supra [age 36, birthplace NY]; 1875 NY Census, supra [age 39, birthplace Westchester Co., NY]; d. December 31, 1889 at 804 Bedford Ave., Brooklyn, Kings Co., NY (Probate File of Elizabeth Appelgate (Kings Co. (NY), January 21, 1890, [no file number]).
In 1850, William was enumerated with his parents Lewis and Eliza in Brooklyn, NY. He was 30, born in NY and a police officer. With him were Ellen, age 26, born in NY (probably his wife); and George L (his son). (1850 US Census, supra). The enumerator provided a helpful additional comment that their house was near Myrtle and Raymond.
In the 1850 city directory for Brooklyn, William R Applegate is listed as a butcher at Myrtle Ave near Raymond. (1850 Brooklyn City Directory, p. 23). William changed careers between the time the directory was printed (probably late 1849) and the time he was enumerated in the census (September 27, 1850). In May of 1850, William was appointed a police marshal by Mayor Smith. (Brooklyn Eagle, May 31, 1850, p. 3).
In 1859, William again listed in the city directory—this time as a policeman. He was probably listed twice: Once under the name William Appelgate, residing at 254 Myrtle Ave., and once under the name William Applegate residing at Myrtle Ave. near Raymond. Also residing at the 254 Myrtle address was Elizabeth Appelgate, widow—probably his mother.
In 1870, William Applegate was enumerated in Brooklyn with his second wife Elizabeth and children. He was 50, born in NY and a policeman. Elizabeth was 34, and born in NY; George L was 23, born in NY, and worked for the fire department; Eliza was 20, and born in NY; William F was 17, and born in NY; Lizzie was 12, and born in NY, Lewis F was 10, and born in NY; Ellen was 3, and born in NY; and Annie born in May 1870 in NY.
On July 6, 1872, daughter Annie died. Her death notice gives her parents’ names as William and Elizabeth Applegate and states the funeral will take place at 306 Franklin Ave.—presumably her parents’ home.
In 1875, William Applegate and family were still residing at 306 Franklin Ave., in Brooklyn. William was 54, and a policeman. Wife Elizabeth was 39, son William F was 21, daughter Eliza was 24, daughter Eliza was 17, daughter [sic, should be son] Lewis was 14, daughter Nellie was 8, and daughter [sic] John was 3.
William’s wife Elizabeth died intestate on December 21, 1889. William Appelgate applied for Letters of Administration on January 16, 1890. This William may be her husband or her step-son—the Petition does not say either way.
The petition identifies the living children and heirs of Elizabeth:
Nellie Gilligan, of full age
John Appelgate, about 18
Harry Appelgate, about 14
Rebecca A Appelgate, about 9
William appears in articles throughout the second half of the 19th Century in the Brooklyn Eagle—mostly arresting criminals on warrants issued by the various courts to which he was assigned.
William Appelget made his will on November 11, 1891 and died the next day. (Probate File of William R Appelgate, Kings Co. (NY), December 7, 1891 [no file number]). His will is not in the probate file.
The Brooklyn Eagle ran several articles about his final illness and death.
OFFICER WILLIAM APPLEGATE VERY ILL
Officer William Applegate of Justice Engle’s court is very ill at his home. The doctors do not hold out much hope of recovery. His is 80 years of age and has been forty-three years on the force.
(Brooklyn Eagle, November 11, 1891)
OFFICER WILLIAM APPLEGATE
---
Brooklyn’s Oldest Policeman said to be Dying.
Officer William Applegate of Justice Engle’s court, whose serious illness was reported in the EAGLE yesterday, will never, it is feared by his friends, do police duty again. He is the oldest man on the force in age and length of service. He is now in his 80th year and was appointed on the force forty-three years ago. “Uncle Bill” he is affectionately termed. His family reunions were notable events. At the last one his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren filled the house. His youngest child is 12 years old and the eldest about 50 years. In feeling and action he was as young as any of his grandchildren. Until recent years he did not wear spectacles. He was taken sick about two months ago. Yesterday his son stated in Justice Engle’s court that he would not live through the week. His residence is at 264 Skillman avenue.
(Brooklyn Eagle, November 12, 1891, p. 3)
THE OLDEST POLICEMAN DEAD
William Applegate, or “Old Uncle Bill,” as he was known in police circles, the oldest member of the force, died yesterday at his home, 164 Skillman street. He was 71 yards old and had been for nearly forty-five years a member of the department. He was attached to Justice Engle’s court for the past ten years.

THE APPLEGATE DIVORCE
---
Counsel moved in the supreme court this morning for alimony and counsel fee in the divorce suit which Mrs. Lillias Applegate has brought against George L. Applegate. The couple were married on January 11, 1871, and have two daughters, 16 and 19 years old, respectively. Mrs. Applegate says that her husband is living with Mrs. Rose, at 332 Livingston street. Mr. Applegate works in the navy yard and gets $25 a week. Mirabeau L. Towns opposed the motion and denied the allegations made by the plaintiff. Justice Bartless reserved his decision.
(Brooklyn Eagle, November 28, 1891, p. 6).
His ex-wife Lillias was enumerated living alone at 522 Van Buren Street in Brooklyn. She was 44, born in NY, and a seamstress. (1900 US Census, NY, Kings Co., Brooklyn Bor., Ward 25, 2/430, Sheet 7A, 86/143).

BR1C (5D4C7B) Daniel B. Applegate, born March 1823, in Kings Co., NY (1850 US Census, NY, Kings Co., Brooklyn 11th Ward, 12/16 [age 27, birthplace NY]; 1870 US Census, NY, Kings Co., Brooklyn, Ward 11, p. 171, 668/1516 [age 50, birthplace NY]; 1875 NY State Census, Kings Co., Ward 11, Elec. Dist. 4, p. 9, 42/103 [age 47, birthplace Kings Co., NY]; 1892 NY State Census, Kings Co., Brooklyn, Ward 11, ED 4, p. [] [age 69]; 1900 US Census, NY, Kings Co., New York, Brooklyn Bor., Dist. 2/153, Sheet 1B [March 1823, birthplace NY]), died June 2, 1909 in East Orange, NJ. (New York Times, June 4, 1909) He married Caroline_____, born abt. 1826 in NY (1850 US Census, NY, Kings Co., Brooklyn, Ward 11, 12/16 [age 24, birthplace NY]), died abt. 1857 (Brooklyn Daily Eagle, March 4, 1883) .
In 1850, Daniel and Caroline lived in Brooklyn where he was a butcher. Also living in the household is Josephine, age 5, birthplace NY--presumably their daughter. (1850 US Census, supra)
In 1867, Daniel declared bankruptcy (Brooklyn Daily Eagle, Dec 9, 1867, p. 12 [see appendix]). Sometime before 1870, Dan (as he was always known), changed careers to become a police officer. In 1870, he was enumerated with his son Jerome in Brooklyn. Dan was 50 and a policeman; Jerome was 14 and attended school. Neither Caroline nor Josephine appear in the household. (1870 US Census, supra).
Daniel and Jerome were enumerated in the NY State Census in 1875. Daniel was 47, born in Kings Co., NY, and a policeman; Jerome was 19, born in Kings Co., NY, and worked as a clerk in a broker’s office in New York. (1875 NY State Census, supra).
There is a long article about “Uncle Dan” Applegate in the March 4, 1883 edition of the Brooklyn Daily Eagle. A transcript is attached in the Appendix. Of genealogical interest is the information that Daniel worked as a butcher in his younger days, thus linking the 1850 Census entry with the later ones.
He was enumerated for the last time in the 1900 Census in Brooklyn, where he was living with his daughter Josephine. He was born in March, 1823, in NY; Josephine was born in August, 1845 and had been married to her husband Fraley P Carpenter for 33 years. (US Census, NY, Kings Co., New York, Brooklyn Bor., Dist. 2/153, Sheet 1B).
Daniel died on 2 June, 1909, in East Orange, NJ. His obituary appeared in the New York Times on June 4, 1909. A transcript is included in the appendix. | Applegate, Daniel B (I14086)
