1891 was a bad year for George. Not only did his father die, his wife sued him for divorce.
THE APPLEGATE DIVORCE

Counsel moved in the supreme court this morning for alimony and counsel fee in the divorce suit which Mrs. Lillias Applegate has brought against George L. Applegate. The couple were married on January 11, 1871, and have two daughters, 16 and 19 years old, respectively. Mrs. Applegate says that her husband is living with Mrs. Rose, at 332 Livingston street. Mr. Applegate works in the navy yard and gets $25 a week. Mirabeau L. Towns opposed the motion and denied the allegations made by the plaintiff. Justice Bartless reserved his decision.
