In the name of God Amen I John Applegate of the Township of Dover in the County of Monmouth and State of New Jersey Being weak in body but of sound mind memory and understanding do make and publish this my last will and testament, in the manner and form following, that is to say

First, it is my will and I do order that all my just debts and funeral expenses be duly paid and satisfied as soon as conveniently can be after my decease.

Second, I give and bequeath unto my beloved wife Sarah Applegate in addition to her rights of Dower at Common law, the use of all my household goods and furniture of every kind and description during her widowhood empowering her at any time to distribute the same or any part thereof to such of my daughters as she shall think proper; and in case she should die without disposing of the same as aforesaid, then I order my executors to divide the same equally among my daughters share and share alike.

Third I give and devise unto my three sons Corlis, John and Jacob Applegate, all my lands, tenements, hereditments and real estate whatsoever, and wheresoever subject to the right of dower in the name of their mother, my said wife, to them, their heirs and assigns forever, also subject to the charges hereafter created and put upon the same to be divided between them in the manner following
To Corlis Applegate and John Applegate my two oldest sons, I give and devise all my outlands, tenements, hereditaments and real estate whatsoever and wheresoever to them their heirs and assigns forever, to be divided between them share and share alike. To Jacob Applegate, my youngest son, I give and devise the homestead farm on which I now live, to him his heirs and assigns forever, after he shall arrive to the age of twenty-one years: But until then, said farm to be under the control and in possession of his mother, my said wife, so long as she may live or remain my widow for the purpose of keeping a home for such of my children as shall remain unmarried or subject themselves to the control of their mother, my said wife.

Fourth I give and bequeath unto my four daughters Hester Irons, Lucretia Applegate, Sarah Applegate and Elizabeth Ann Applegate, two hundred dollars each to be paid by my Executors herein after named provided nevertheless, that if my estate should be sufficient, I empower my executors to pay to each of my daughters before mentioned, an equal one half in value to that of each of my three sons.

Fifth I hereby appoint my executors guardians of my two youngest children until they shall respectively arrive of age; to be supported, maintained and educated during their minority in the exercise of which power, I enjoin my said executors, that in quality of guardians as aforesaid, they endeavor to place the younger as much as they conveniently can, on a footing with the older. I also enjoin on my executors full power to distribute my personal estate to the best advantage.

Sixth In case of the death of my said wife or either of my two youngest daughters before distribution of shares, then the said money or shares to be equally divided between the survivors: And if my youngest son should die before he arrive at the age of twenty one years, and without lawful issue, then I order and it is my will that the portion herein devised, to be equally divided between the surviving sons and daughters share and share alike.

Seventh I hereby empower my executors to equalize my real and personal property amongst my said sons and daughters in the manner before mentioned making the value of estate between my three sons equal alike and my four daughters cash to have half as much in value or amount as each of my sons proportioning the same according to the valuation of estate.

Eighth In case my personal estate should not be sufficient to pay the debts and legacies herein before bequeathed I then charge my real estate herein before devised to my three sons with the same, and order my executors to regulate the estate so as to meet the payments of the same.

Ninth and lastly I hereby appoint my loving wife, Sarah Applegate, and my son Corlis Applegate executors of this my last will and testament, vested with full power to execute the same and guardians to my two youngest children during their minority.

In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this seventh day of March in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and thirty one.
