Dwain’s first wife, Irvamae (Vincent) Applegate, was chosen in 1962 as the first dean of education at St. Cloud State University (then St. Cloud State College). In 1966, she was elected the president of the National Education Association. She passed away due to a brain aneurysm in 1973.
