John M. Applegate, 78, of 217 Honeycreek Drive, died at 2:20 p.m. Wednesday in Monticello Healthcare Center. He was born July 21, 1910, in Bardstown, Ky., to Louis and Florence E. Krebs Applegate. He was married May 21, 1940, in Salem to Ethel M. Wilson, who survives. He had lived in Monticello since 1945, coming from Elizabeth. He was employed by the Monticello RCA Plant for 30 years, retiring in 1975. He also was employed by Lakeview Home. He was a member of Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Church, Monticello. Also surviving are eight sons, John P. and Dennis R., both of Rt. 1, Monticello, William "Bill" L., Rt. 3, Monticello, Eugene "Gene" M., Rt. 1, Reynolds, Paul W., Rt. 5, Monticello, Robert L., Rt. 1, Delphi, and David L. and Darrell L., both of Monticello; six daughters, Mary Louise Wheeldon, Pat Chapin, and Brenda L. Isom, all of Monticello, Anna E. McCaw, Rt. 1, Rossville, Carrie Manns, Royal Center, and Betty L. Riddle, Chalmers; a brother, Charles, Monticello; two sisters, Anna Totten, Monticello, and Rose Totten, South Bend; 30 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Three brothers preceded in death. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday in Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Church, with the Rev. James Goodrum officiating. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 9 p.m. today in Miller-Voorhis Funeral Home, where the rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m.

DEC. 19,1993 Charles E. Applegate MONTICELLO — Charles E. Applegate, 81, of 205 W. Rickey Road, died at 12:55 a.m. today in Monticello Health Care Center. Born Nov. 19, 1912, in Bardstown, Ky. he was the son of Mark Lewis and Florence Elizabeth Krebs Applegate. On Nov. 18,1939, he was married in Monticello to Harmony J. Ball, who survives. Mr. Applegate had lived in Monticello since 1939, coming to the community from Depauw. In 1978, he retired from RCA. He also had been a bus driver for Twin Lakes School Corporation for several years and had owned and operated Monticello Marine Service for 25 years. He was a member of Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Church, where he had been an usher for several years and belonged to the Holy Name Society. Mr. Applegate also belonged to the Redman Lodge. Also surviving are four sons, David L., South Bend, James G., Monticello, Wayne L., Lafayette, and Edward P., Reynolds; three daughters, Julia M. Donahue, Kokomo, Melba R. Nickerson, Reston, Va., and Ruth J. Thompson, Idaville; two sisters, Anna Totten, Monticello, and Rose Totten, South Bend, 25 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. One son. one grandson and four brothers preceded in death. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday in Our Lady of the Lakes ; Catholic Church, with the Rev. James Goodrum officiating. Burial will be in Riverview IOOF Cemetery. Services for Leo C. Applegate, 73, Patton, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in Miller-Voorhis Funeral Home. He died at 4 p.m. Saturday in St. Elizabeth's Hospital, Lafayette. He had been ill seven years. He was born June 9, 1915, in Bardstown, Ky., to Louis and Flora E. Krebs Applegate. He was married Oct. 29, 1940, in Monticello, to Mary Dutton, who survives. He had moved to Patton in 1949 from Monticello. He retired in 1980 after working 34 years at RCA. He also was employed at Robbins Bakery for several years. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, having served on a destroyer tender in the Pacific Theatre. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Redman and Eagles lodges. Also surviving are two daughters, Carolyn J. Fear, Hershey, Neb., and Marilyn A. Rowland, Dayton, Ohio; two brothers, Charles and John, both of Monticello; two sisters, Anna Totten, Monticello, and Rose Totten, South Bend; several nieces and nephews; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Two brothers preceded in death. The Rev. Carl D. Baker will officiate at the service. Burial, with military rites, will be in Chalmers Cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. today in the funeral home.

Marine Pvt 1st Class Joseph Charles Applegate, 20-year-old son, born on Jan 1, 1948 to Charles and Harmony Applegate of Monticello, lost his life in Vietnam on Friday, February 2nd. His death occurred at Quang Tri, when he was struck in the head by an enemy hand grenade, while serving with the Third Marine Division. The family received offical notice from Lafayette Marine Sergeant Barber and Father Richard Puetz, pastor of the Lakes Catholic Church here where the deceased was a member. Other surviviors besides his parents are four brothers, David of South Bend, James, Wayne and Edwin at home, and three sisters, Mrs Julia Donahue of Kokomo, Mrs Melba Nickerson of Kansas City and Ruth at home, and his grandparents, Mr and Mrs Grover Ball of Chicago. Joe was a 1967 graduate of Monticello Twin Lakes High School, and an employee of Garden City, Inc, when he enlisted in the Marines on June 27, 1967. He was transferred to Vietnam in December. The Applegate family has been advised that the body will be shipped home for burial within the next ten days or two weeks. The last letter the parents had received from Joe was dated January 20th, when he was at another location guarding a bridge at that time. Added later: The final mass will be held in the Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Church at 10 Thursday morning and burial will be in the Riverview Cemetery.

David L. Applegate, 57, loving husband, father, son, brother and friend, of State Road 2, South Bend, Ind., passed away on Friday, May 26, 2000. He was born on May 23, 1943 to Charles L. and Harmony (Ball) Applegate in Monticello, Ind., and had lived in South Bend since 1962, coming from Monticello. Dave was employed for the last 16 years with Federal Express in South Bend. He served a brief stint in the Navy upon graduating from Roosevelt High School in White County in 1961.
On Aug. 28, 1965, he married Lorrie G. Siglawski in St. Matthew's Cathedral, South Bend. Proud of and devoted to his family, friends and home, Dave is survived by his mother, Harmony Applegate of Monticello; his wife, Lorrie Applegate of South Bend; five daughters, Lori Ann (husband Paul) South of South Bend, Lynn (husband Jason) Hopper of Elkhart, Kris (fiance Rich Gadacz) Applegate of South Bend, Julie (fiance Steven Chrobot) Applegate of South Bend and Jennifer Applegate at home; and two sons, Paul (wife Christine) Applegate of North Liberty and Dan (wife Carrie) Applegate of Mishawaka. All are left to cherish his memory. He is also survived by his nine grandchildren who idolized and adored him, Timmy Applegate, Scotty Applegate, Matthew Applegate, Ashleigh South, Lisa South, Emma Applegate, Nathan Hopper, Katie Paul and Kraig Paul; three sisters, Julia (husband Leo) Donahue of Kokomo, Ind., Melba (husband Ric) Nickerson of Reston, Va. and Ruth (husband Buzz) Thompson of Idaville, Ind.; three brothers, Jim (wife Shirley) Applegate of Monticello, Wayne Applegate of Lafayette, Ind., and Ed (wife Cathy) Applegate of Reynolds, Ind.; and by several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Charles L. Applegate and his brother, Joseph C. Applegate.
Dave, a devoted and involved member of St. Stanislaus Kostka Catholic Church-Terre Coupee, was a member of the Parish Council, a Lector, an Eucharistic Minister and he had currently served as the president of the St. Stan's Usher Club. Friends and family remember his charitable heart and his willingness to assist those he loved as well as those in need.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, May 30, in St. Stanislaus Kostka Catholic Church-Terre Coupee, with Rev. Daryl Rybicki officiating, and Rev. Eugene J. Kazmierczak and Rev. Derrick Sneyd co-celebrating. Interment will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery. Friends may visit from 2 to 8 p.m. today, May 29, in KANIEWSKI FUNERAL HOME, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend, where a parish Rosary will be prayed at 7:30 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made in honor of Dave to Missionaries of Charity, Inc., U.S. Foundation, 335 E. 145th St., Bronx, N.Y. 10451.
