1830-07-25 Letter from Derrick Applegate to James Applegate

July 25th 1830

Dear Brother

I now with pleasure Inform you of my safe arrival here. [W]e found all our friends and Relations here well. [W]e landed here the 7th May and have had considerable [. . .] of sickness in my family since we came. [O]ur youngest child took sick first. [T]he next Asher was taken with a violent fever but are slowly on the mend at this time. [T]he Bilious fever Rages here this season more than ever was known both in the country and towns.

Crops of wheat and oats are excelent here this season but corn crops is not prosperous Looking at present owing to the Backwardness of the spring season. [I]t was very cold and wet here untill nearly harvest and then changed to hot and Dry untill with in a few Dayes we have had several showers which appear to give vegetation new Life.

I have some idea of gowing [on] a trip to New Orleans this winter if I can make araigements acordingly as money is hard to be got here and no certain way of making any but By going Down the river.

I add no more except your friends here Joines me in sending their Respects to you and family.

N B the Bond your father holds on you is Safe and you nead not fear no Danger you shall heare more concerning it in another Leter.

I Left my sickel in the house I moved from and if you send and get it you may have it.

[p.s.] [O]ne thing more I omited is the Death of Elizabeth Likens formerly Elizabeth Heth who Died on the first of March Last with the Coloura Morbes a complaint subject to the family.
