BR1C (5D4C7B) Daniel B. Applegate, born March 1823, in Kings Co., NY (1850 US Census, NY, Kings Co., Brooklyn 11th Ward, 12/16 [age 27, birthplace NY]; 1870 US Census, NY, Kings Co., Brooklyn, Ward 11, p. 171, 668/1516 [age 50, birthplace NY]; 1875 NY State Census, Kings Co., Ward 11, Elec. Dist. 4, p. 9, 42/103 [age 47, birthplace Kings Co., NY]; 1892 NY State Census, Kings Co., Brooklyn, Ward 11, ED 4, p. [] [age 69]; 1900 US Census, NY, Kings Co., New York, Brooklyn Bor., Dist. 2/153, Sheet 1B [March 1823, birthplace NY]), died June 2, 1909 in East Orange, NJ. (New York Times, June 4, 1909) He married Caroline_____, born abt. 1826 in NY (1850 US Census, NY, Kings Co., Brooklyn, Ward 11, 12/16 [age 24, birthplace NY]), died abt. 1857 (Brooklyn Daily Eagle, March 4, 1883) .

In 1850, Daniel and Caroline lived in Brooklyn where he was a butcher. Also living in the household is Josephine, age 5, birthplace NY--presumably their daughter. (1850 US Census, supra)

In 1867, Daniel declared bankruptcy (Brooklyn Daily Eagle, Dec 9, 1867, p. 12 [see appendix]). Sometime before 1870, Dan (as he was always known), changed careers to become a police officer. In 1870, he was enumerated with his son Jerome in Brooklyn. Dan was 50 and a policeman; Jerome was 14 and attended school. Neither Caroline nor Josephine appear in the household. (1870 US Census, supra).

Daniel and Jerome were enumerated in the NY State Census in 1875. Daniel was 47, born in Kings Co., NY, and a policeman; Jerome was 19, born in Kings Co., NY, and worked as a clerk in a broker’s office in New York. (1875 NY State Census, supra).

There is a long article about “Uncle Dan” Applegate in the March 4, 1883 edition of the Brooklyn Daily Eagle. A transcript is attached in the Appendix. Of genealogical interest is the information that Daniel worked as a butcher in his younger days, thus linking the 1850 Census entry with the later ones.

He was enumerated for the last time in the 1900 Census in Brooklyn, where he was living with his daughter Josephine. He was born in March, 1823, in NY; Josephine was born in August, 1845 and had been married to her husband Fraley P Carpenter for 33 years. (US Census, NY, Kings Co., New York, Brooklyn Bor., Dist. 2/153, Sheet 1B).

Daniel died on 2 June, 1909, in East Orange, NJ. His obituary appeared in the New York Times on June 4, 1909. A transcript is included in the appendix.
