Dist. 4, p. 17, 81/186 [age 22, birthplace Kings Co, NY]; 1892 NY State Census, Kings Co., Brooklyn, Ward 11, ED 19, p. 18 [age 38]; 1900 US Census, NY, Kings Co., Brooklyn, Ward 20, 2/305, Sheet 15B, 143/365 [December 1852, birthplace NY];1905 NY State Census, Kings Co., ED 18, AD 10, Block E, p. 29 [age 52]), d. ____. He married abt 1878 (1900 US Census, supra [married 22 years]) (1) Carrie A. Mole, b. Aug 1860 (1892 NY State Census, supra [age 30]; 1900 US Census, supra [August 1860, birthplace NY]), d. March 26, 1901 (Brooklyn Eagle, March 28, 1901, p. 5), 2) Ellen T. ____, b. abt 1858 (1905 NY State Census, Kings Co., supra [age 47]), d. _____.

Edward was enumerated in the household of Edward in 1870. He was 16 years old and an apprentice brick mason. (1870 US Census, supra). He appears to have stayed in the brick laying business his whole life. In the 1878 Brooklyn city directory, he and his father (Edward N) are both listed as masons living at 176 Myrtle Ave., Brooklyn (1878 Brooklyn City Directory, p. 16). He may be the Edward Appelgate, mason, living at 659 Warren—this is the only Applegate/Appelgate mason listed in the directory. If he is this Edward, his father Edward had either retired, moved, or died.

In 1877, Edward "son of a well known Brooklyn oysterman" filed for divorce from his wife Sarah, alleging she abandoned him and was living "an improper life in Philadelphia". (Brooklyn Daily Eagle, Sept. 27, 1877, p. 4).

In 1892, Edward L and his family were living in Brooklyn, NY. Edward L was 38, and a bricklayer; Carrie A was 30; Elizabeth was 7; and William F was 10. (1892 NY State Census, supra). “William F” is probably an enumerator’s error replacing “Lillian F”.

In 1897, there is a Edward L Appelgate living at 79 North Portland Ave., Brooklyn. He was a mason. (1897 Lain Brooklyn City Directory). Three years later, in the 1900 Census, Edward L Appelgate is still living there. The 79 North Portland Edward L Appelgate has this household:

    Address: 79 North Portland
Appelgate, Edward L Head Dec 1852 Married 22 years Mason
    -- Carrie A Wife Aug 1860 2/2 children
    -- Elizabeth M Daughter Sep 1879
    -- Lillian F Daughter July 1882

(1900 US Census, NY, Kings Co., Brooklyn, Ward 20, 2/305, Sheet 15B, 143/365).

Based upon the middle initial “L”, the spelling of the last name “Appelgate”, and his occupation, I believe this is the same person. In addition, 79 North Portland is only about six blocks from 176 Myrtle.

Edward L’s first wife died on March 28, 1901. (Brooklyn Eagle, March 28, 1901, p. 5). He apparently remarried to Ellen T. sometime before 1905.

In 1905, Edward L and his new wife were living at 374 Myrtle Avenue in Brooklyn. Edward L was 52 and a mason; Ellen T. was 47.

I can find no further record of Edward.
