Morrison was born abt. 1828 in PA [1850 US Census, PA, Greene Co., Richhill Twp., age 22, birthplace PA); 1860 US Census, PA, Greene Co., Richhill Twp., NARA Film # M653, p. 47, family 339 (age 32, birthplace PA)] d. 18 Jan 1865 at Winchester, VA of typhoid [Pension Application # 87,041; Stone, Findagrave Memorial # 83329225]. He is buried in Fairview Cemetery, Wind Ridge, Greene Co., PA. He married 5 Dec 1850 [Pension Applications], Sarah D Williams, b. bat 1830 in VA [1860 Census, supra, (age 30, birthplace VA); 1870 US Census, PA, Greene Co., Richhill Twp., p. 41, 296/298 (age 40, birthplace VA)], d. 11 Feb 1875 [Stone, Finagrave Memorial # 83322134 (under the name Sarah D Loar)]. She married second on 18 Jan, 1865, Jacob Loar.
Morrison was appointed administrator of Isaiah Applegate's estate 26 July 1852 along with Ellis Scott. [Greene Co. PA Will Book 3-111].
In 1860, "M W" Applegate and his family were enumerated in Richhill Twp., Greene Co., PA. M W was 32, born in PA, and a farmer; Sarah D was 30, born in VA; T A (female) was 7, born in PA; H J (female) was 5, born in PA; Wesley was 3, born in PA; and Nancy W was 3 months old, born in PA. [1860 US Census, PA, Greene Co., Richhill Twp., p. 47, 345/339]. Living next door are William Williams and Talitha Williams, probably Sarah's parents. And living a short distance away is Nat Kerr, age 34, with his wife Annie and daughter Mary E. Given Nat's age and location, he is probably the same Nathaniel Kerr who was living in Isaiah's household in 1850.
On 20 Mar 1865, S D (probably Sarah) applied for letters of administration for the estate of M W Applegate. Letters were issued and the inventory filed on 15 April 1865. [Greene Co. PA Will Book 4-120].
On 18 September Sarah D Applegate, as administratrix of Morrison W Applegate, moved the court for an order enforcing an oral land sale contract Morrison had entered into. In 1864, Morrison had sold a tract of land to James Cartwright. He had apparently taken payment and allowed Cartwright to take possession of the land, but had never made a deed. The court granted the motion. [Greene Co. PA Orphan's Court Docket 6-148].
On 19 Mar 1866, Jacob Loar, Sarah's new husband, was appointed guardian of Morrison's children. The petition gives their names as: Salatta Anne, Hannah Jane, Wesley, Nancy Urbana, and Sarah Francis.
Sarah, her second husband, and Morrison's children were enumerated in 1870. See their individual entries for details. Interestingly, the children were all enumerated with the surname "Loar".
Morrison volunteered for the First W.Va. Cavalry, mustered in on 31 Mar 1864, and served in Company B. He contracted typhoid while in service, and died in the Cavalry Corps Hospital in Winchester, WV. On the same day as Morrison joined up, Nathaniel Karr/Kerr did, too. Nathaniel's presumed brothers, Isaiah and Watson had already signed up on 19 Nov 1861, when the unit was first organized. [Return of Capt. Hugh P. Boon's Co. B, 1st Reg. W.Va. Vol. Cav., Dec. 5, 1864 transcribed at http://www.lindapages.com/wvcw/1wvc/1wvc-agb.htm].
Morrison and Nathaniel Kerr were very close--close enough that Nathaniel lived in Morrison's father Isaiah's household in 1850. If the Beckett marriage list is correct and does refer to the Walter Kerr who is the father of Nathaniel, then Nathaniel was the child of Susannah Applegate. What can we say about the relationship between Susannah and Isaiah? | Applegate, Morrison U (I41387)
