DOROTHY JANE APPLEGATE, 84 of KEYPORT, died Friday, Sept. 21, at home. Dorothy graduated from Keyport High School, Class of 1940. She attended nursing school until an unfortunate accident required her to care for her husband at home. She worked for the Keyport Police Department as secretary for the detective bureau and retired after 20 years. She spent more than 10 years caring for her only child, who suffered from multiple sclerosis, in her home. Dorothy attended the Keyport First Baptist Church for more than 80 years and sang with the choir for 74 years.

Dorothy was predeceased by her husband, Richard Deckert Applegate; and her son, Richard David Applegate. She is survived by a daughter-in-law, Patricia Applegate; a grandson and granddaughter-in-law, Richard Scott and Kelly Ann Applegate; a granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Kelly Jean and Joseph Stahl; three great-grandsons, Richard Henry and David James Applegate and Joseph Richard Stahl; and two great-granddaughters, Zoe Alexandria and Chloe Jane Stahl.

Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Bedle Funeral Home, 61 Broad St., Keyport. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Shoreland Memorial Gardens, Hazlet. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Dorothy's memory to the First Baptist Church of Keyport, 45 Main St., Keyport, NJ 07735.
