    Edward Brooks Applegate II
    June 2, 1926 - June 7, 2013

Edward Brooks Applegate II, a true gentleman, passed away on June 7, 2013 at age 87. Brooks, as he was known to all, was revered by his friends and family for the kindness and respect he always showed others, whether it be the stranger just met or the son-in-law who failed to properly tie off his dingy allowing it to drift across White Lake. He loved his friends, maps & charts, ice cream, Mackinac racing, Travis McGee, strawberries, dogs, life at the lake and “simply messing about in boats” - although not necessarily in that order.

Brooks, a champion sailor, was taught by his mother during childhood summers spent on Portage Lake, in northern Michigan. He raced Snipes, Sunfish, E scows, and Sonars to numerous victories. However, he considered his greatest success as a sailor to have occurred in 1953 when he met his wife-to-be, Susanne “Doddin” Applegate, while competing in a regatta at the White Lake Yacht Club. Brooks always considered her the superior sailor and together they cruised the Great Lakes/North Channel, and the Caribbean and Mediterranean Seas.

In addition to his love of all things boats, Brooks was an avid sportsman and dedicated conservationist. He was a sure shot when it came to hunting game and an elegant fly fisherman known for his ability to cast in all types of weather. He cherished his time at Grass Lake Hunting and Fishing Club, bird hunting in Illinois, and elk hunting in Colorado.

As a part of the “greatest generation,” Brooks enlisted in the Navy in 1943 shortly before his graduation from East Grand Rapids High School and reported for active duty soon after commencement. He served in the Pacific theater.

After his honorable discharge from the Navy, he attended Colgate University and in 1951 became a second generation Colgate graduate, majoring in geography. Brooks returned to Grand Rapids and joined his father’s business selling forest products.

Brooks was born to George and Margaret Perkins Applegate on June 2, 1926 at Blodgett Hospital, East Grand Rapids, MI. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Doddin Applegate. He was preceded in death by son Stephen Hunter Applegate (married to Julie Curtis Applegate), and is survived by son Brooks Applegate III of Kalamazoo, MI and daughter Martha Schonberger, wife of Lawrence Schonberger of Leesburg, VA. He is also survived by six grandchildren, Brooks IV, Kara and Malia Applegate, and Ben, Samuel and Harrison Schonberger.

There will be a memorial service for Brooks at the Wabaningo Club at Sylvan Beach on Sunday, July 28th at four o’clock. As an expression of sympathy, donations to the White Lake Sailing School in memory of Brooks and his passion for sailing may be mailed to P.O. Box 454, Whitehall, MI 49461 or made online: http://wlsailingschool.com/
