    Notes:

WALTER HOWARD APPLEGATE-As junior partner of the firm of Howard Applegate & Son, Walter Howard Applegate is well known in Lakewood and in Red Bank as an expert in the general contracting business. He is unusually well prepared for taking care of the business management of that firm, being a graduate of Detroit University, where he completed a course in higher accounting, and having also studied law for one year.
The Applegate family traces descent from Thomas Applegate, an Englishman, who was one of the patentees of Flushingt, Long Island, in the patent dated October 19, 1647, issued by6 Governor Kieft. The family is an ancient one in England, where according to the best authorities, the various forms of the name, Applegarth, Appleyard, Applewaite, were all derived from “apple orechard.” Thomas Applegate was one of a party that resided for a short time in Holland, before they came to Long Island, (Actually, they came first to Wessegusset, north of Plymouth, in Plymouth Colony.—ED) and their residence in the former place indicates that they left England because their religious or political views were objectionable to the government of Charles I. From Gravesend, Long Island, Thomas Applegate and his wife, Johannah (Gibbons) Applegate, removed to Monmouth County, where he was one of the twelve Monmouth patentees. He died about the beginning of 1699, leaving sons, Thomas, John, Daniel, Joseph, Benjamin, and Richard. In the patriot army of thr Revolution the names of twenty one of the family are recorded, eight of these being from Monmouth County. The descerndents of Thomas and Johannah (Gibbons) Applegate, now number many thousands and are widely scattered throughout then country. John D. Applegate, the great-grandfatjher of Walter Howard Applegate, served in the War of 1812. His son Ivins D., married Emolin Polhemaus, and their son, Howard married Anna M. Hurley; these last named being the parents of Mr. Applegate.
Walter Howard Applegate was born in Pleasant Plains, August 4, 1892, son of Howard and Anna M. (Hurley) Applegate, the former of whom for many6 years has been engaged in business as a general contractor, and is founder and senior member of the firm of Howard Applegate & Son. After receiving his early education in the public schools of his native district, Mr. Applegate became a student in Lakewood High School, from which he graduated with the class of 1912. He then matriculated in the Detroit University of Detroit, Michigan, where in 1916 he completed a course in higher accounting. After graduation from college he spent one yearstudying law with Wilfred Jayne, and then became associated with his father in the general contracting business, under the name of Howard Applegate & Son. The firm does and extensive business in both Lakewood and Red Bank, and in the vicinity of both these towns may be seen many dwelling houses and public buildings erected by Mr. Applegate and his son. The father has for many years been an expert in the practical construction work., and his son is well qualified to take care of the business management of the firm. They have made an enviable reputation for good workmanship, for the keeping of the time clause of their contracts, and for honest business methods.
Politically Mr. Applegate gives his support to the Republican party. After the entrance of the United States into the World War he entered the service, November 15, 1917, and was sent to Camp Dix, at Wrightstown, New Jersey, from which post he was transferred to Camp Meigs, Washington, D.C. As a member of the 302nd Motor transport Corps, he served overseas for twenty months, and received his honorable discharge, in May, 1919, at Camp Upton, Long Island.
