Pauline had been previously married to _____ Whipple, who fathered at least one child, Allen P Whipple, who was living with Louis and Pauline in 1930.

      Louis was enumerated with his parents in Mille Lacs Co., MN in 1875. He was still living with them in 1885. By 1900, he had moved to Deer River, Itasca Co., MN, where he was a day laborer living in either a camp or a boarding house. (1900 US Census, supra). His father had been born in New York and his mother had been born in Canada.

      According to his mother’s obituary, Louis had moved to Seattle, Washington by 1917. (Princeton Union, May 10, 1917, p. 1). He must have moved back to Minnesota shortly after that, because he registered for the WWI draft in Craigville, Itasca County, Minnesota. He was a farmer, born on 8 September 1874, of medium height and build with blue eyes and light colored hair. He gave the name of his sister, Mrs. E.M. Chapman, as his contact.

      In 1922, Louis purchased a 160 acre quarter section in Itasca Co., MN. The plot is on the northern edge of Itasca County, north north-east of Big Fork. (Patent Ser. No. 858941, 14 April 1922, Cass Lake (MN) Land Office).

      By 1930, Louis had moved to Lane County, Oregon. He was enumerated there with his wife Pauline, step-son Allen Whipple, and daughter Catherine M. Applegate. He was a farmer on rented land, and Pauline was a “Train Nurse – Surgical”. Louis was 55, born in MN; Pauline V was 39, born in IL; Allen Whipple was 13, born in MN; and Catherine M was 2 years and 9 months old, born in MN. 1930 US Census, supra.

      In 1940, Louis and Pauline were still living in Lane County, Oregon. Louis was 65, born in MN; Pauline was 49, born in Michigan; Kathlene was 12, born in MN.

      According to the Oregon Death Index (available at www.familysearch.org), Louis died on 16 January 1953 in Multnomah County, Oregon.
