Henry was born in Herkimer County New York, probably in 1838. In the 1840 US Census, the household of William Applegate in Herkimer Co., NY contains three males under the age of 5. These are probably Henry and his brothers William and Lewis. In the 1850 US Census, Henry was enumerated with his parents and siblings in German Flatts, Herkimer Co., NY. Hew was 12 and born in New York. (1850 US Census, supra). In the 1855 NY State Census, Henry was 17, born in NY, and working as a boatman. He was still living with his parents, who had moved to Litchfield in Herkimer County. In 1860, Henry was living in the household of Richard and Catherine Van Buren in Richfield, Herkimer Co., NY and working as a farm laborer. On October 11, 1861, Henry joined the Sixth New York Volunteer Infantry as a saddler. His term expired after two years and he re-enlisted as a Sergeant. By 1865 he was back in New York although, like most Civil War soldiers at the time, his term was not technically completed. According to his obituary in the Princeton Union, Henry moved to Minnesota in 1866, coming first to Fillmore County and then in 1868 moving to Princeton (which straddles Mille Lacs and Sherburne Counties). I cannot locate him or his siblings (except for Louis in Manhattan, New York) anywhere in the 1870 Census. Henry and his family were enumerated in the 1875 MN State Census in Mille Lacs County. He was 29 (an obvious 10 year error) and born in NY. In the household were Kate, 21, born in NB [New Brunswick]; Lewis, age 0, born in MN; and Elizabeth, age 56, born in NY—most likely Henry’s mother. (1875 MN State Census, supra). Henry and his family were enumerated in the 1885 MN State Census in Mille Lacs County. Henry was 48 and born in New York; Kate was 33 and born in New Brunswick; Lewis was 10, born in New York; May was 8 and born in Minnesota. (1885 MN State Census, supra). While almost all of the population schedules of the 1890 US Census were lost to a fire, the veteran’s schedules largely survived. Henry was enumerated in Princeton, Minnesota on the veteran’s schedule. He had served in the 6th New York Cavalry (Co. G). He enlisted on 11 October 1861 and was discharged on 27 June 1865. (1890 US Census Surviving Soldier’s Special Schedule, SD 3, ED 61, 117/120). In 1900 Henry and Kate were enumerated in Princeton, Minnesota. Henry was 60, a bricklayer, and born in NY; Kate was 47 and born in Canada. Henry’s father was born in New Jersey and his mother was born in Massachusetts. Kate had borne three children, two of whom were living. (1900 US Census, supra). Henry died on 1 February 1906 in Princeton. His lengthy obituary is attached as an appendix. Catherine died on 8 May 1917 and her obituary is also attached as an appendix. APPENDIX Obituary of Henry Applegate The Princeton Union, February 8, 1906, p. 1. Henry Applegate died at his home near Silver Lake, about one mile east of Princeton, on Thursday morning, February 1st, at 3 o'clock, from heart failure. Mr. Applegate was born in Cedarville, Herkimer county, New York, on January 22, 1838. On October 11, 1861, he was enrolled as a saddler in Company G, Sixth New York Mounted Volunteers, and received an honorable discharge on December 15, 1863, at Culpepper Court House, Virginia. He re-enlisted in the same company on December 16, 1863, the day following his discharge, was promoted to sergeant on January 1, 1865, and received his second discharge at Clouds Mill, Virginia, June 27, 1865. His company formed part of the famous army of the Potomac, and he was present in all the great battles in which the Sixth regiment was engaged. During both terms of his enlistment he was neither sick nor excused from duty a single day, neither was he wounded. His record was a most remarkable one. He seemed to possess a charmed existence, for he was usually in the thickest of the fight. Mr. Applegate came to Minnesota from New York in 1866 and located in Fillmore county. He remained there two years and removed to Princeton township in 1868, where he remained until the time of his death. He was married in 1873 to Miss Katherine Steeves of Princeton, Justice F. Morrison performing the ceremony. Of the union there were born two children, Mrs. Elmer M. Chapman and Louis Applegate, both residents of Princeton. The widow of the deceased also survives him. The funeral services were conducted at the family residence by Rev. Cathcart of the Princeton M. E. church on Sunday last at 2 o'clock and the remains were interred in Oak Knoll cemetery under the impressive rites of the Grand Army of the Republic, of which he was a member. Notwithstanding Sunday was a very cold day a large number of persons followed the good old veteran to his last resting place. The pallbearers were: W. H. Townsend, Frank Woods, Anson Howard, Joseph Nokes. S. B. Heath and David Whitcomb. Henry Applegate was a hero of many battles. He twice enlisted to fight for his county and he fought in the front ranks whenever an opportunity presented itself. His brave deeds are on record in the correspondence of his commanding officers in the war department at Washington and will live forever. He as a soldier and a patriot. He was an honorable man, a man esteemed by all who knew him and beloved by his family—affectionate and charitable to a fault. It is with the deepest regret we chronicle the removal of this kindly old veteran from among us. But the Lord knoweth that which is best. Obituary of Catherine (Steeves) Applegate The Princeton Union, May 10, 1917, p. 1 MRS. CATHERINE A. APPLEGATE. --- Esteemed Mille Lacs County Pioneer Passes Over Great Divide --- Another Mille Lacs county pioneer answered the final summons when Mrs. Catherine A. Applegate succumbed to cancer of the stomach at her home in this village Tuesday morning. Mrs. Applegate had been ill for some time, and the past several weeks was tenderly cared for by her daughter, Mrs. E.M. Chapman of St. Cloud. Funeral services were conducted yesterday afternoon at the Methodist church by Rev. James A. Greer, and were largely attended. Interment was in Oak Knoll cemetery. Deceased, whose maiden name was Catherine A. Steeves, was born at North River, New Brunswick, Canada, Sept. 21, 1852. She came to Princeton with her parents in the fall of 1862 and was married to Henry D. Applegate on September 14, 1873. Mr. Applegate passed over the great divide 11 years ago. Mrs. Applegate is survived by a son, Louis F., of Seattle, Wash., and a daughter, Mrs. E.M. Chapman, of St. Cloud. Three sisters and six brothers also survive, viz: Mrs. Thos. Scribner, Petitcodiac, New Brunswick, Canada, Mrs. May Rines and Wm. Steeves, Princeton; Abel H. Steeves, Empress Canada; Mrs. John W. Nokes, Cottage Grove, Oregon; Robt. H. Steeeves [sic], Seattle, Wash.; Henry Steeves and Arthur Steeves, Princeton, and Fred A. Steeves of Beech, N.D. Mrs. Applegate was ever ready to lend a helping hand in connection with anything tending to promote the welfare of the village, and was always active in the Women's Relief association. She was a loving wife and mother, a considerate neighbor and numerous friends will cherish her memory.
