747. John Applegate

John Applegate, born c1770; died 1853 in Noblesville, Hamilton Co., Ind.(He was killed by a log falling on him at a barn raising near Noblesvilleat the age of 83--p. 323 of History of Hamilton Co., Ind.). (This barn raising was 5 miles NNW of Noblesville, IN and 2.5 WSW of Cicero, IN). He issupposed to have served in the War of 1812. He married a Miss Newman, born ; died .(No. 4527 in the Newark, NJ Evening News refers to his wifeas "Mary Gump". It is probable that John had two wives, but neither John or his wife appear in 1850 census of Indiana. He is supposed to have hadthe following children: Ebenezer, Daniel, Jacob, John, Jr., Katie, Sarah, Hannah, Elizabeth, Nancy, and Polly, by one list, but there is nodefinative listing. Children:

2174. Peter Newkirk Applegate

Peter N. Applegate was born in Jefferson County, Kentucky April 19, 1822, and was the sixth of eleven born to Samuel and Casandra (Newkirk)Applegate, each of Dutch descent. Peter N. came with his parents in 1826 to Owen County, where they made a settlement, and where he is living at thepresent time. His father purchased fifty-seven acres of B. B. Arnold, all composed of unbroken forest. Samuel Applegate then entered eighty acres.Peter N. attended school when he was not needed on the farm, and he thus received a fair education. He was married, September 12 1848 to ElizabethShelton, daughter of John and Elizebeth (McCarty) Skelton. They have no children of their own, but have kindly reared five orphans, three boys andtwo girls, an action speaking well for their charity and goodness. Mr. Applegate is a member of the P. of H. and has held various offices in theorder. He is now Lecturer Subordinate. He has been a member of the State Grange. His wife is a communicant of the Missionary Baptist Church. Mr. A.served in the Mexican war in Company I, Sixteenth United States Infantry having listed April 14 1847. He took part in the battle of Paragon, and wasdischarged in 1848. In the late war, during Morgan's raid, he raised a company under Gov. Morton's call, of 100 men, in one and one-half days, andreceived a commission as Captain. He reported, but was not order out. During the conflict, he helped enroll soldiers families for the purpose ofrelief, and was one of the few who gave all his earnings toward this object. Mr. Applegate has severed as Clerk of the Board of Trustees, as Justiceof the Peace, and as Trustee of his township for one term each. He possesses 217 acres of land in Owen County, improved and cultivated, and 160acres in Webster County, partially improved. He has been always very successful, and is a very intelligent and progressive man, and is highlyrespected in his township. In polities, he is a Republican.

In August, 1845, she and her husband petitioned the Orphans Court to order the sale of of her deceased father's property. The petition lists thenames of her living siblings and their spouses.
